PFA NSW World Fisheries Day Competition

World Fisheries Day, is celebrated on November 21, and is dedicated to highlighting the critical importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world.

To acknowledge this important event, the Professional Fishers Association of NSW (PFA) are holding its inaugural PFA World Fisheries Day competition for NSW commercial fishers.

Overwhelmingly, there has been a call out to hear more about everyday stories and the culture and history of the NSW professional fishing industry.

We want to show the public how the members of our industry work tirelessly to put fresh, local seafood on people’s plates. It is a proud industry that spans generations, ethnicities, and regions.

We have some great cash prizes to get the message out about the professional fishing industry!

What You Need To Do

We want you to make an Instagram reel or Facebook video about your story and tag us! It doesn’t have to be high tech. You just need to shoot it on your phone and post it on your social media account.

How Do I Do It?

  • Take photos or video and use editing tools to add music and effects. It’s totally up to you
  • You can be entertaining, creative, engaging
  • Don’t be afraid to be fun
  • Get your kids or even grandkids to help you out

You Might Want To Tell Us Things Like:

  • What made you get into the professional fishing industry?
  • What and why do you fish in your region?
  • How long have you been doing it for?
  • What is the impact of the sustainability measures in fisheries over the years?
  • Why you love what you do?

Here’s What We Are Looking For:

  • An engaging, informative video that “hooks” us in and tells the story of you/your boat or business
  • The culture of what you do and the community behind it
  • Positive impact to your local community and environment

Eligibility Criteria

  • You must hold a current NSW Commercial Fishing Licence
  • You must post an Instagram video/reel or Facebook video and tag the PFA and as outlined below

How To Enter

  • Post an Instagram reel or video (minimum of 15 seconds) to your Instagram grid that tells us the story of your fishery, what you do and how its sustainable, tag @pfa_nsw and use the hashtag #pfa_nsw
  • If you do not have access to Instagram, you can post a video to your Facebook page and tag @professionalfishersassociation

Any entry deemed offensive and does not represent the strategic objectives of the PFA and the NSW Commercial Fishing Industry will be immediately disqualified and reported to the relevant social media platforms. How do I know if I am eligible to enter?

All entrants will need to fulfil all the following criteria:

  • Entrants submitting an entry must be a NSW commercial fisher or is given permission to enter into the competition on behalf of the commercial fisher/fishing business they represent
  • You must hold a current NSW Commercial fishing licence

Terms and Conditions PFA World Fisheries Day Competition

These terms and conditions (Terms and Conditions) constitute your agreement with the Professional Fishermen’s Association of NSW (PFA) ABN 93 801 719 337 (Promoter) in relation to PFA World Fisheries Day competition (Competition).
On entering the competition, you are agreeing ot the Terms and Conditions as laid out in this document.
This Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Instagram of Facebook.
You understand that you are providing your information to the Promoter and not to Instagram or Facebook.
PFA World Fisheries Day Competition is based on the skill level of each entrant and as such not required to carry a permit in any state of Australia. The Public vote component of the competition is a “game of chance” selected at random to the value of $250 only and as such not required to carry a permit.

1. COMPETITION PERIOD

The Competition will commence on 29 October 2021 and will conclude on 15 November 2021 (“Competition Period”)

  • The window for entry into the Competition commences at 05:00 PM AEST on Friday 27 October 2021 and will close on Monday 15th November 2021 at 09:00AM AEST
  • On 15th November 2021, a shortlist (the Peoples’ Choice shortlist) of approximately five (5) to ten(10) Entrants, chosen by the PFA, will be announced and public voting to determine the People’s Choice Award will open (refer “People’s Choice Award”) on that date via the PFA World Fisheries Day Competition landing page. Public voting opens once the People’s Choice shortlist is announced on 15 November 2021 and closes on Friday 19th November 2021 at 11:59pm AEST.
  • Two winners will be selected by the Judging Panel from the Top 5 finalist’s shortlist – the First Prize winner and Second Prize winner. One additional winner will be selected by public voting from the People’s Choice shortlist of approximately 5-10 entries, as the People’s Choice Award winner.
  • All three winners (First Prize, Second Prize and the People’s Choice Award) will be notified privately on Saturday 20 November 2021 by email. On Sunday 21st November 2021, upon acceptance by reply email, the winners will be announced publicly. Each winning entry is entitled to one prize only (see Prize details below).

2. JUDGING CRITERIA

  • There will be three (3) winners awarded the Competition prizes.
  • Two winners, the First Prize and Second Prize winners will be selected by the Judging Panel based on the judging criteria for both the video entries and Instagram reels/video or Facebook
  • The third winner will be the People’s Choice Award winner. This will be selected via public voting from on the PFA website and available on social media channels. The public will vote on entries included in the People’s Choice shortlist of approximately five to ten entrants. The People’s Choice shortlist will be decided by an expert marketing-based panel review of all eligible entries against the Judging criteria for video entries and Instagram reels and videos.
  • Entrants will be assessed on their submission and how well it addresses the judging criteria below.

3. HOW TO ENTER AND JUDGING PROCESS

Social Media Competition

Step 1 – Entries open on Friday 29th October and will close on Monday 15th of November 2021 at 9:00am AEST

  • 15 second Instagram reel or 15 second Facebook video. Entrants must post a 15 second (minimum length) Instagram Reel or video promoting NSW commercial fishing industry in a fun and engaging way across your personal or business Instagram channel or Facebook page. The Instagram Reel or video must include the following handles and tags in the caption: @nsw_pfa #NSWPFA
  • If Entrants are posting to their personal Instagram account, the account must be public for the purpose of this Competition.
  • If Entrants do not have access to Instagram, a 15 second (minimum length) video posted to Facebook is acceptable. The video uploaded to Facebook should include the hashtags mentioned above and a link to the PFA Facebook page. If Entrants are posting to their personal Facebook account, the account must be public for the purpose of this Competition.

Step 2 – Peoples’ Choice shortlist and voting

  • Approximately five (5) to ten (10) entrants will be selected for inclusion in the People’s Choice shortlist based on the judging criteria and selected entrants will be notified via a message via Facebook or Instagram.
  • Peoples’ Choice shortlisted entrants will have videos made available for public viewing on social media and voting on the PFA website nswpfa.com.au. Public voting will commence on 17th November 2021 via an online form on nswpfa.com.au and conclude 20th November 2021 at 5:00pm AEST. The People’s Choice shortlisted finalist with the most votes on nswpfa.com.au, that is neither the winner of the First Prize or Second Prize as evaluated by the Judging Panel, will be deemed the “People’s Choice Award Winner”.
  • The People’s Choice Award Winner will be notified on 20th of November 2021 by email/message through their social media account Winners will then be announced on World Fisheries Day 21st November 2021.

Public Voting Competition

Public voting will be open on Wednesday 17 November and run until 5pm Saturday 20 November 2021. Entrants must

  • Like the @nsw_pfa on Instagram and/or follow the PFA on Facebook @professionalfishersassociation. One vote for each Facebook or Instagram account page follower
  • Go to the PFA website at www.nswpfa.com.au and fill out the form and tag your choice of winner and the @nsw_pfa on Instagram or Facebook.

Winner of the public voting competition will be drawn at random from those voting in the competition through the PFA website at www.nswpfa.com.au . Winners will be announced at 9am Sunday 21st November and announced via the PFA’s social media and website accounts

4. CONDITIONS

Each entrant represents and warrants that they:

a. engage in sustainable and safe fishing practices in line with the principles of commercial fishing in NSW (Commercial Fishing (nsw.gov.au)
b. products and practices comply with all applicable laws and do not contain any sexually explicit, defamatory or obscene materials; and do not violate any third party’s copyright, trademark, design, database or other rights;
c. they will at all times act with due regard to public morals and conventions and must not behave in a manner that offends a substantial portion of the community or reflects unfavourably on the PFA, NSW Fisheries Management or ;
d. they have full authority to grant the PFA the rights referred to in these Terms & Conditions; and
e. it will indemnify the PFA against all loss, damage and liabilities arising from a breach of any of the warranties in these Terms & Conditions.
f. each entry is original and authentic in nature, does not infringe on any existing copyright, trademark, third party intellectual property rights

Failure to adhere to these clauses will result in instant disqualification from Competition.

6. PRIZES

First Prize Winner, Second Prize Winner and People’s Choice Award Winner will be notified 20th November 2021 privately by email/private message to their social media account. Public announcements of the winners will be made on World Fisheries Day, 21st November 2021 on the PFA website and associated social media accounts. A special member notice will be emailed to PFA members on Monday 22nd November.

There are a total of three cash prizes and one voucher for NSW seafood to be awarded as part of the Competition, with the prize pool totalling to $2,000 AUD. This is broken down into the First Prize Winner ($1,000 AUD), Second Prize Winner ($500 AUD) and People’s Choice Award Winner ($250 AUD). A further public raffle prize of $250 AUD will be drawn at random from members of the public voting for the People’s Choice Award.

The First Prize and Second Prize Winners will be determined by the Judging Panel and will respectively receive the First and Second Prizes as defined below. Each winning entry is only entitled to one prize.

The winner of either First or Second Prize is not entitled to also receive the prize for “People’s Choice Award”. If the winner of either the Judging Panel-selected First or Second Prize also receives the most public votes in the People’s Choice voting process, the People’s Choice Award will be granted to that entry that has the next highest number of public votes and which is neither the First or Second prize winner.

Prizes are defined as:

1st Prize Winner will receive:

  • $1,000 cash from the PFA of NSW
  • A prize pack of NSW PFA merchandise for you and your crew

Second Prize will receive:

  • $500 cash from the PFA of NSW
  • A prize pack of NSW PFA merchandise for you and your crew

People’s Choice Winner will receive:

  • $250 cash from the PFA of NSW
  • A prize pack of NSW PFA merchandise for you and your crew

Public voting competition

  • $250 from the local independent seafood retailer or wholesaler
  • A pack of NSW PFA merchandise including caps, T-shirts

Conditions on Prize Winnings

  • All entries, and materials submitted to PFA World Fisheries Day competition in connection with the Competition (collectively, “Entry Materials”), along with all associated copyright and other proprietary rights, except as reserved by relevant third parties, become the property of the NSW PFA upon submission, and any Entry Materials will not be returned to any entrant.
  • All Prizes are non-transferable. The decision of the Judging Panel is final and binding. If any Prize or any element of a Prize becomes unavailable or is otherwise unable to be provided, the Promoter may substitute a Prize or element of a Prize of equal or greater value, subject to any written directions from the relevant authorities. Winners will not be entitled to any additional compensation in the event that the Prize or element of a Prize has been substituted at equal or greater value.
  • Cash Prizes to be distributed within 30 working days after First Prize Winner, Second Prize Winner and People’s Choice Award Winner accept their prize.
  • First Prize and Second Prize Winners will be notified on or by Saturday 20th November, via email or message through social media account. Winners must accept the Prize by reply email and acknowledge the prize winning within twenty-four hours as of the time of the email notification otherwise the Prize will be considered unclaimed. If the Prize remains unclaimed, despite the Promoter making all reasonable efforts to notify the Winner, the next entry that best meets the judging criteria, as determined by the Judging Panel, will be deemed a replacement Winner and such a replacement Winner must accept the Prize by email within twenty-four hours of the date of the relevant email notification. If a Prize remains unclaimed in accordance with these Terms and Conditions, this replacement procedure will be repeated, and the Prize will be offered to the next entry that best meets the judging criteria as determined under these Terms and Conditions.
  • By accepting a Prize, Entrant’s consent to the use of their name, state of residence, likeness or Prize information for promotional and other reasonable purposes without further payment, except where prohibited by law. Winners may be required to participate in the NSW PFA (PFA)’s reasonable marketing and promotional activities.
    This process is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Non winners will not be notified.
  • If you are a winner and you submit any material, including but not limited to photographs, videos or testimonials, to the PFA for use or publication in connection with PFA’s reasonable marketing and promotional activities, including but not limited to PFA’s official social media activities, you waive any right you may have to inspect or approve the activities and you release and discharge the PFA from any claims or liability relating to PFA’s reasonable use of your material.
    Winners are responsible for all taxes, expenses, insurance premiums, and any ancillary cost that may be payable as a consequence of receiving a Prize or an Awarded Product.

6. JUDGING PANEL

The Judging Panel of the Competition is composed of three panel members. Full details on the judges will be disclosed shortly.

If one of the Judging Panel members is unable to fulfil their role as a judge in the Competition, the Promoter may appoint another judge at the Promoter’s discretion.

7. PROMOTER’S LIABILITY

The PFA is only liable for damages suffered as a result of wilful misconduct or gross negligence by the PFA. The PFA will not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages to anyone making posts and/or videos for this competition or on behalf of someone for the purposes of this competition.

8. Miscellaneous

a. The Promoter reserves the right to disqualify any entrants who provides false information, fails to provide information, conspires with others to gain an unfair advantage or is otherwise involved in any conduct that involves manipulating, interfering or tampering with the Competition or otherwise preventing the conduct of the Competition throughout as intended by the Promoter.
b. Any personal property rights in entries are owned by the Promoter. Details from entries will be collected and used for the purpose of conducting the Competition (which may include disclosure to third parties, including but not limited to agents, contractors, service providers for the purpose of processing and conducting the Competition) and for promotional purposes surrounding the Competition. By entering the Competition entrants consent to the use of their information by the Promoter for the purpose of processing and conducting the Competition may use this information or disclose it to the Judging Panel for the purposes of identifying the Winners and on the PFA’s social media channels for promotional, marketing and publicity purposes without any further reference or payment to the entrant. The Promoter will keep this information for a reasonable period of time after the end date of the Competition. If the Promoter does not collect your information, you may not be able to participate in the Competition. This notice should be read in conjunction with our Privacy Policy that contains information about how we handle your personal information (including personal information collected via our website) and sets your rights in relation to your personal information (including how to withdraw your consent at any time). Judging Criteria

The judging panel will be assessing entries based on the following:

  • How well does the video communicate our NSW commercial fishing industry and its ongoing commitment to sustainability?
  • To what extent is the reel or video unique and innovative?
  • Will the story have a positive impact on your local community and/or regional NSW more broadly?
  • How entertaining and engaging is the post?

The Judging Process

A judging panel of marketing experts will select the top five to ten entrants to shortlist two days before the panel meets to consider the First Prize winner and Second Prize.

Shortlisted entries will be shared on the PFA’s social media channels and go in the running to win the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice winner will be determined by public votes conducted through our social media accounts and website.

Winner of the public voting competition will be drawn at random from those voting in the competition through the PFA website at www.nswpfa.com.au . Winners will be announced at 9am Sunday 21 November and announced via the PFA’s social media and website accounts.
