Safety
Safety compliance is a paramount concern for the needs of those working in the professional fishing industry. There are ongoing developments in rules and regulations for crews of commercial fishers and their vessels.
The PFA works with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) to assist in promoting developments in the industry, safety and compliance requirements and the needs of your crew.

Training
Training is an essential part of the professional fishing industry. It is paramount for industry members to ensure all crew have the right training and there are standards of professional competency crews must achieve.

There are many different roles in the professional fishing industry. You can work as a skipper, watch officer (mate), engineer, or deck hand – just to name a few…and all have the right training and qualifications to work as a commercial fisher.
Fishers also have to comply with specific NSW regulations to include:

Local Waterway Management- This includes management of ports, harbours and moorings, waterway access matters, bar crossings, local knowledge requirements, speed limits, drugs and alcohol, traffic management plans, designation of waters, regulation or prohibition of the operation of certain vessels or classes of vessels in specified areas, aquatic licences

Carriage of dangerous goods

Emergency management and response

Pollution – This includes oil pollution, sewage and garbage management

Workplace health and safety and first aid
